At Google I / O 2017, we announced
a redesign of the home screen of the Android TV. We have extended the recommendation line
concept so that each application can have its own line (or multiple lines) of content on
the welcome screen. Since the release of the new home screen, we have seen
the increased adoption of new recommendation channels for Android Oreo in a wide
variety of applications.

With more and more applications surfacing high quality recommendations using the new
canals, the inheritance
recommendation line in the new home screen on Android O will be eliminated
during the next year.

Currently, when an app creates recommendations with inheritance
Notification-based API Content is added to a channel for this application. the
channel may already exist if there was recommended content for you when you
updated from Android N (or below). If there is no channel for the application, it
will be automatically generated for you. In both cases, the user can not add or
remove programs from the channel, but they can move, hide and show the channel.
When an application starts using the new API to add its own channels, the system
removes the automatically generated channel and the application takes control of the display
of their content.

Over the next year, we will eliminate automatic channel generation.
Instead of generating multiple channels, one for each application’s inheritance
recommendations we will insert a channel for all legacies
recommendations. This channel will appear at the bottom of the channel list.
Users can move or delete it. When a user upgrades to O Android, the previous
Android N recommendation line (and below) becomes a channel at the bottom of
the welcome screen.
